invented maps
We walk on the surface. We find our way using maps and mental constructs we've made of the surfaces on which we travel.
As the artist Anne Truitt writes, "we dwell as strangers on the earth to become its wrack. We invent it for ourselves. We name it land and sea and sky. We divide its reaches arbitrarily into degrees of latitude and longitude, supplemented by a contrivance we call time. We keep ourselves in orderly fashion by imposing on it grids entirely our own."
We are the architects of our maps. What would maps look like if we included glimpses of the history found beneath our feet? Or, if our maps layer not only history but also memory, thoughts, and impressions?
