Idiosyncratic Printing
In my first summer as a MFA student at MICA, I wanted to put some distance between the artist’s hand - my hand - and the work. I created that distance first by inking an orange and making impressions with it, then running an inked brayer over irregular circles traced from the orange. I rolled the brayer until it ran out of ink, sometimes inking long rolls of paper.
Unwittingly, these swaths of dwindling ink were expressive. In fact, they began to seem referential...not to the orange, but to astronomical objects and happenings.
